We aren’t the only ones who have noticed how happy our patients are with their results. In fact, our many current and prospective patients have also taken notice, and have begun to ask more and more questions about the dental implant process. To answer these questions, Dr. Dennis Goehring is blogging from Austin, TX to give a detailed overview of the dental implant process.
A Straightforward Process for a Restored Smile
The dental implant process can be broken down into three easy to follow steps. These steps include:
The first step of the dental implant process is the procedure, which will place an implant fixture in the empty spot left behind by your missing tooth. Once this implant fixture is in place, the area will be stitched up so that it can properly heal. At this point, an abutment and temporary replacement crown may be attached to your implant fixture. However, it is more likely for these parts to be placed after the recovery period instead.
The Recovery Period
The second step of the dental implant process is the recovery period. It is during this time when osseointegration occurs. Osseointegration is the process of your implant fixture being accepted by your body as a natural piece of your jaw structure. This process is made possible by the fact that dental implants are made from titanium, which is a biocompatible alloy that your body does not recognize as unnatural. It is largely thanks to this process that dental implants are able to provide such great results for our patients. This period tends to last three to six months.
Once the implant fixture has properly healed and osseointegration has completed, you will return to our practice to have your restoration attached. For a single tooth replacement, the typical restoration used to top the implant fixture is a crown. What makes our crowns special is the fact that we custom make them for every patient based on scans we take of their remaining natural teeth. By doing things this way, we can provide our patients with beautiful replacement teeth that fit in perfectly among their remaining natural teeth. In fact, once in place, our patients have trouble telling the difference between their artificial and natural teeth.
